Red flags when hiring a contractor
- No license number, or a number that doesn't match the business name on CSLB.
- A suspended or expired license, or a classification that doesn't fit your job.
- Large down payment. For home improvement, the down payment can't exceed $1,000 or 10% of the contract price, whichever is less. [CSLB]
- Cash only, or pressure to sign today.
- A bid far below the others; CSLB warns it may mean a mistake or corner-cutting. [CSLB]
- "You don't need a permit." Work requiring a permit always requires a license, even under $1,000. [CSLB]
- "Exempt" from workers' comp but brings a crew. See bond & workers' comp.
- No written contract. Home improvement contracts over $500 must be in writing. [CSLB]
